National Health Observances (NHOs) are a great time to educate residents and staff about health issues and healthy choices. The only problem is, finding out what is being celebrated when in time to do something about it!
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services makes it easy at Healthfinder.gov/NHO/. They have a calendar of monthly observances and lots of health information, toolkits, and health news. Don’t miss the Older Adult Health page, it will be especially useful for finding health-related articles for your newsletter or next exercise class.
Another excellent resource is the Health Observances and Recognition Days Calendar published annually by Eastern Virginia Medical School. You’ll have to do a Google search each year to find it, but it is very comprehensive, so absolutely worth a little extra effort to locate.
According to our sources, this month is:
- National Immunization Awareness Month
- Cataract Awareness Month
- Psoriasis Awareness Month
- Relay For Life
- And more!
There are also week-long and single day observances listed.
